Principles and Practice of Business Continuity: Tools and Techniques
Jim Burtles, Rothstein, 2016

Having begun his career in disaster recovery at IBM in the 1970s, Jim Burtles has some 40 years’ experience in the business continuity sector. In 1994 he helped to found the original Business Continuity Institute. His practical experience includes hands-on recovery work with victims of traumatic events such as explosions, earthquakes, storms, and fires.

This includes technical assistance and support in almost 100 incidents and disasters, as well as advice and guidance for clients in over 200 emergency situations.

His first edition of this book was written in 2007 – and much has changed even since then. With this second edition of Principles and Practice of Business Continuity, the author concentrates on the key capability of continuing to deliver products and services at acceptable predefined levels following disruptive incidents.

Burtles has restructured the original book with a renewed focus on learning in five stages – Preparation and Start-up; Building a Foundation; Responding and Recovering; Planning and Implementing; and Long-Term Continuity. Fully indexed and with an extensive glossary, this book is aimed at students of business continuity, as well as seasoned practitioners looking for guidance.

Having himself trained over 4,000 business continuity professionals over the years, Burtles has designed this edition with the classroom in mind, beginning each chapter with learning objectives, and finishing with multiple-choice self-examinations.

A range of additional resources are available to download for free with purchase of this title, and features dozens of fully editable models, sample plans, templates, forms, and checklists – all supplied via the publisher’s website.

Other recently published works from Jim Burtles include Coping with a Crisis: A Counselor’s Guide to the Restabilization Process (2011), and Emergency Evacuation Planning for Your Workplace: From Chaos to Life-Saving Solutions (2013).
