A major incident was declared at London Luton Airport last night after a huge fire took hold in a car park at Terminal 2.
Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service received calls just before 21:00 to a fire involving a car on level three of the multi-storey car park. The severe fire spread rapidly through the open structure, causing significant structural collapse.
Firefighting operations were undertaken to control the blaze and protect nearby buildings, vehicles, aircraft, and the Luton DART. At its peak there were 15 Rescue pumps, three aerial appliances and over 100 firefighters on scene at this incident.
Crews from Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire, and the London Fire Brigade were called in to support, along with Bedfordshire Police and East of England Ambulance.
Up to 1,200 vehicles are understood to have been in the car park at the time of the fire and subsequently damaged. As many as 250,000 passengers are thought to have been affected by the incident after flights were suspended.
UPDATE: As of 10am this morning, Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has scaled back and this is no longer a major incident. There is still considerable congestion around the airport, and the public are being urged to stay away. An investigation into the cause of the fire will begin at a safe point.
