Fire forces Glasgow Central closure

Scotland’s busiest railway station, Glasgow Central, has been closed and rail services severely disrupted after a major fire broke out on Sunday in a building on Union Street.

The blaze, which is understood to have started in a vape shop, engulfed a four-storey commercial property next to the station, causing part of the building to collapse as firefighters battled the fire into the evening and overnight. There were no reported casualties.

At its height, 18 fire appliances and specialist resources, including three high-reach vehicles, were deployed to tackle the blaze. By Monday morning, the response had been scaled back to nine appliances and three high-reach vehicles.

Network Rail confirmed Glasgow Central would remain closed until further notice, with no estimate yet for reopening. All services to and from the high-level platforms were cancelled, and trains using the low level platforms are not calling at the station. Passengers were advised to seek alternative travel arrangements and avoid the surrounding area.
