IRM launches Women in Risk Forum

Women in the risk profession frequently face biases in decision-making systems, informal channels and performance metrics throughout their careers, according to the Institute of Risk Management. It argues that success should be measured not just by operational or financial KPIs, but also by well-being, empathy and situational awareness.

This was among the topics discussed at the institute’s recent International Women’s Day Leadership Forum. The event focused on the female perspective in risk leadership; the need to encourage more women to enter and progress in the risk profession; and the protection of women and children through effective risk management.

“Gender imbalance is a risk exposure, not just a fairness issue,” said IRM board member Mariam Crichton. “Our event highlighted the non-linear paths many women and risk professionals take in their careers, often coming from diverse backgrounds, and from outside traditional risk management.”

The power of cross-sector collaboration was another prevalent theme at the event. “Participants reflected on the dangers of groupthink in risk decisions, citing the Grenfell Tower tragedy and major oil spills, where critical voices were overlooked,” Crichton explained. “Women’s natural skills in listening, empathy and questioning from non-dominant positions were highlighted as key strengths in spotting risks before they escalate, and in influencing better outcomes.”

To help further this dialogue, the institute is launching its new Women in Risk Forum. Designed to create a “structured space for support, mentorship and talent development”, the forum will encourage women to challenge biases, and widen access to decision-making and career pathways – and in so doing strengthen resilience and leadership across the field. The IRM says this cross-industry approach will allow members to share experiences, learn from diverse perspectives, and drive meaningful change in risk management and governance.
