Governance role expands beyond compliance - survey

Governance professionals are playing an increasingly influential role in boardroom decision-making, according to research launched at Governance 2026 by The Chartered Governance Institute UK and Ireland.

The Governance Market Survey 2026, based on responses from 971 governance professionals, found that 65% believe the influence of the governance function is increasing. Meanwhile 66% said supporting board decision-making is becoming more important, 59% pointed to growing responsibility for succession planning, and 50% highlighted the rising importance of AI literacy for boards.

The survey also found growing pressure on governance teams, with 74% reporting higher workloads over the past year, and 42% saying their function is not adequately resourced. Among those with increased responsibilities, 70% said there had been no meaningful increase in recognition.

The findings suggest governance professionals are increasingly moving beyond traditional compliance responsibilities to become strategic advisers supporting boards on decision-making, organisational change and succession planning.
