NorthStandard joins Sustainable Shipping Initiative

NorthStandard has joined the Sustainable Shipping Initiative.

The insurer will focus on the SSI’s Human Risk and Resilience platform, with the goal of strengthening efforts to ensure seafarers have safe, secure and rewarding careers rather than just meeting minimum compliance standards.

Yves Vandenborn, head of loss prevention, Asia-Pacific at NorthStandard, said: "The well-being of seafarers is fundamental to a safe, resilient and sustainable maritime industry. As a mutual insurer, we recognise that people are at the heart of global trade and we are pleased to be joining the work of the SSI’s Human Risk and Resilience workstream. By working collaboratively with our members, industry partners and the wider maritime community, we can help drive positive outcomes, and we look forward to contributing to this important work."

Ellie Besley-Gould, chief executive of the Sustainable Shipping Initiative, added: "A safe and successful shipping industry depends on the people who crew it, and insurers understand risk to those people with a rigour few others in the sector can match.

"NorthStandard's experience strengthens the evidence base inside our human risk and resilience work, and we're thrilled to have them alongside our members as we shape what better looks like across the industry."
