Liberty Mutual expands surety operations in Germany

Liberty Mutual Insurance is expanding its surety operations in Germany with the opening of a second office in Hamburg.

The move builds on the company’s established presence in Cologne and adds to its network of surety operations across 10 European countries, as well as in North America, South America and Asia-Pacific.

As part of the expansion, Dr Martin Wendt has been appointed head of surety Germany, with additional underwriting responsibilities for Austria and Switzerland. He will be based in the new Hamburg office.

Dr Wendt has more than 13 years’ experience in the surety sector, covering risk underwriting and business development. He previously served as an authorised officer at Tryg Trade in Hamburg. Earlier in his career, he worked at Allianz Trade in a range of roles including group-level credit approval, management of critical risks, and head of large corporates surety. He holds a PhD in economics and finance.

“As an inspiring and passionate leader, Dr Wendt motivates teams with energy and vision, fostering a culture of trust, collaboration and shared success,” said Roland Richter, head of surety EMEA. “We look forward to leveraging his expertise to strengthen our market position and deliver innovative surety solutions for our clients.”
