Workplace conduct and psychological safety in focus

Growing regulatory pressure on firms to strengthen psychological safety is driving new efforts in the London insurance market to improve workplace culture and encourage earlier reporting of concerns.

As part of these efforts, the London and International Insurance Brokers’ Association has partnered with Self Space to launch a mental health champions training initiative for member firms. The programme aims to build more open working environments, strengthen speak up confidence and help staff identify issues before they escalate into conduct or reputational risks.

The initiative follows cross-market workshops in 2025 where brokers called for clearer guidance on non-financial misconduct, including the role of whistleblowing champions and the use of culture-related management information. The first session will deliver CPD-certified training in-person, extending access beyond larger firms to brokers of all sizes.

Jacqueline Girow, who leads Belonging@LIIBA, said: “Feedback from our members made it clear that while firms understand the importance of mental health awareness in the workplace, there is a need to better support colleagues with the skills they need to be leaders, listeners and culture influencers. The Self Space training builds confidence with a focus on prevention and maintenance, crucial in creating psychological safety.”

Jodie Cariss, CEO of Self Space, added: “We’re delighted to be partnering with LIIBA at a time when many firms are thinking more seriously about culture, conduct and psychological safety at work. Proactive mental maintenance at work is not just about awareness; it's about giving people practical skills and confidence to notice issues earlier, support better conversations, and help create healthier, safer workplace cultures before problems escalate.”
