Businesses on high alert as activists target Windsor

Berkshire businesses are being warned to prepare for climate activist group Extinction Rebellion’s planned occupation of Windsor Great Park over three days from Friday 30th August.

The size and scale of the planned protests mean significant disruption is likely, according to professional security organisation, Assist Security Group, which is sharing detailed intelligence with businesses and the police on XR's intended three-day demonstration.

ASG says the sharing of this information has likely thwarted more severe action by the group, and that occupation-style protest is now less likely, with police and security teams now on high alert.

Rob High, head of intelligence and risk at ASG says XR's Windsor strategy still represents a significant escalation in activist tactics.

“They're targeting a symbol of the establishment to amplify their message and as part of their 1% campaign," he said. "Other potential target organisations should be alert to this."

ASG’s report reveals XR's plans to use diversionary tactics, including a march down The Long Walk, and performances by red-robed protestors, to potentially access restricted areas. While XR has denied intentions to ‘storm’ the castle, ASG's intelligence team were able to uncover plans to try and access restricted areas of the castle.

Recent events, including riots across the UK and geopolitical tensions, underscore the need for proactive security measures.

"The Windsor situation is just one piece of a larger puzzle," High added. "We're seeing a surge in activist activities, cyber threats and political instabilities. Our job is to help clients see the whole picture and prepare accordingly."
