CMC partners with Cirium on aviation analytics

CMC has entered into an agreement with aviation analytics provider Cirium to understand the effects of cyber events on the UK aviation industry.

Cirium delivers global data and analytics solutions to organisations in finance, aerospace and travel, as well as government bodies. On any given day, it manages more than 300 terabytes of data covering schedules, routes, aircraft configurations and passenger record numbers. Cirium data provides insights on more than 35 million flights per year.

“Cyber events can have far-reaching impacts on airlines including lost fare income, accommodation costs for stranded passengers and passenger compensation. Events also cause a knock-on effect to airports, retail businesses in airports and the broader tourism industry,” comments Ruth Goodwin, head of operations at the Cyber Monitoring Centre. “Our partnership with Cirium provides us with valuable data and insights into airline delays and cancellations and allows us to assess the economic impact to the airlines and other connected industries."

Cirium’s data has provided the CMC with insights into the effects of the CrowdStrike cyber event. Some 390 flights scheduled for departure from UK airports were cancelled over the course of three days in July, impacting 65,000 passengers, with a further 1,700 departures delayed by more than an hour.
